What is a herniated disc?
The intervertebral discs are cartilaginuous elastic tissues, placed between two vertebrae. They provide mobility and amortization of the spine. Because of physical strain, trauma, genetic predisposition, obesity and other factors, they suffer from degenerative changes that factor into herniated disc.
In practice, this means that a portion of an intervertebral disc moves into the spinal canal, where the nerves and spinal cord are located, causing their compression and pain, discomfort, numbness, paresthesias, and other more severe clinical symptoms.
Herniated disc does not have a specific clinical picture but the pains often occur in the spine region, irradiating into limbs. Such pain may represent symptoms of several disorders. They can occur due to muscles or ligaments inflammation, or vertebral joints arthrosis. It can also be internal organs pain that mimics vertebral pain. For instance, a person with kidney problems feels pain in the region of the spine. There are many causes of back pain. Of course, it is necessary to make the distinction between a pain caused by a herniated disc and other back pains. But herniated disk is one of the most common causes of spinal pain.
Herniated disc treatment
In many cases the treatment of the herniated disc is conservative, such as physiotherapy, massage, anti-inflammatory (steroidal or non-steroidal), epidural cortisone injections, but if symptoms do not improve or disappear after a few weeks, surgical treatment should be considered. Surgical treatment of a herniated disc is indicated depending on the severity of symptoms, their impact on the lifestyle and the consequences of the compression.

This stops pressure on the affected nerve roots and reduces pain. The patient may feel relief immediately even during the procedure.
