Oncological surgery

Surgical treatment is a radical stage of treatment in many cases of cancer. Medpark has modern, well-equipped operating rooms and experienced specialists for the treatment of a wide range of oncological diseases.

Stomach, colon, and rectal cancer

In localized stages, radical treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancer (stomach, colon, rectum, and pancreatic cancer) is surgical. Medpark surgeons practice laparoscopic and minimally invasive treatment methods to improve the patient’s quality of life, and when these are not possible, they employ traditional open surgical methods. Surgical treatment may be combined with pre-operative or post-operative chemotherapy and may also involve chemotherapy or radiation therapy when using linear accelerators with the best performance in collaboration with foreign medical partner institutions.

Dr. Sergiu Usurelu, a general surgeon specializing in the treatment of stomach, colon, rectal cancer, and other less common types of cancer, has worked for 13 years in Portugal, accumulating significant experience in this field. He now applies modern laparoscopic surgical methods at Medpark, which enhance the effectiveness of treatment and the quality of life for patients. The decision regarding treatment, especially for late-stage tumors, is made after analyzing each case individually within the “Tumor Board.”

Breast cancer

Surgical treatment is recommended in almost all cases of breast cancer diagnosis. The goals of the surgery include complete resection of the primary tumor with negative margins to reduce the risk of local recurrence and pathological staging of the tumor and axillary lymph nodes to provide necessary prognostic information. Additional treatment for breast cancer is aimed at treating micrometastatic disease and may include radiation therapy and systemic therapy (including hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy).

Dr. Dragomir Timbur specialized in leading institutions and hospitals in Turkey, with extensive experience in managing breast cancer patients. He performs a wide range of surgical interventions at Medpark, including lumpectomy, mastectomy, removal of limited or larger numbers of lymph nodes, and prophylactic mastectomy (removal of both breasts). Modern global trends have evolved from radical surgery through mastectomy to less invasive surgical methods such as breast-conserving surgery and oncoplastic surgery.

Modern global trends in breast cancer treatment aim to achieve the best possible postoperative aesthetic appearance without compromising oncological surgical outcomes.

Gynecological cancer

Cancers of the female reproductive organs vary in their etiology, manifestations, progression, and, therefore, require a wide range of diagnostic methods and treatment approaches. The most common types of cancer include cervical, ovarian, and endometrial cancers, which unfortunately are often detected at later stages due to neglecting routine check-ups and ignoring symptoms.

Dr. Lilian Gutu, a gynecologic oncologist and medical doctor with a doctorate, has participated in the development of national clinical protocols for cervical and endometrial cancer. He has honed his surgical technique during internships in Germany, Sweden, and Canada, and throughout his over 20-year professional career, he has saved many patients from the harsh diagnosis of “cancer.”

Prostate cancer

The majority of prostate cancer cases are adenocarcinomas, with neuroendocrine tumors and sarcomas being less common. The choice of treatment method is based on the results of biopsies and other studies. Early-stage cases may require simple monitoring, but more often, surgical treatment is necessary, such as prostatectomy combined with hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

Dr. Vasile Botnari, a urological surgeon with a doctorate, has extensive experience in prostate cancer surgery and collaborates with specialists from various fields, both nationally and internationally, to develop complex treatment plans.

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid nodules are the most common thyroid gland pathology. After the discovery of nodules, confirmation or exclusion of malignancy is necessary. In such cases, a biopsy is the most effective method for assessing the nature of the nodule. If a thyroid cancer diagnosis is confirmed, radical intervention (hemithyroidectomy or thyroidectomy) is the best approach to minimize the risk of recurrence and the need for further interventions.

Dr. Eugeniu Condratchi, a general surgeon specializing in endocrine and oncological surgery after training and internships abroad, successfully operates on patients with thyroid cancer at various stages. People who have undergone thyroid surgery require lifelong monitoring, which is provided by endocrinologists.
