Neurology

Neurology is the medical specialty designed specifically for diagnosis and management of nervous system pathologies. The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system (the nerves that go to muscles and innervate the skin and sensory organs).

Pathologies that can be treated by a neurologist:
  • Brain and spinal cord – stroke (cerebral stroke), dementia including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine and other headaches, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS);
  • Spine – herniated disc, spondylosis;
  • Peripheral nerves – plexopathy, peripheral neuropathy;
  • Muscles – myopathy, muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis.

The nervous system controls all of our sensation and behavior, and therefore the kinds of symptoms that may result from disorders of the nervous system are almost without limit. Symptoms of neurological disease include poor memory, poor balance, headache, blackouts, seizures, speech disorders, trouble swallowing, numbness or loss of sensation, spasticity, tremor, difficulty in controlling urination, and many other symptoms.
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, make an appointment for an immediate checkup to a neurologist!

Neurological assessment includes:
  • Primary consultation (examination of the patient);
  • Investigations, functional tests (laboratory tests, x-rays, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance, etc.);
  • Repeated consultation (examination of the patient after the treatment or indicated investigations);
  • Development of treatment plan.
Neurological investigations carried out at Medpark:
  • Spine radiography, especially advisable to exclude other diseases that can be confused with disc herniation;
    Computed tomography (CT) – provides useful information on the structure of the brain, skull or spine fractures, the presence of intracerebral blood;
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is much clearer compared to a CT in diagnosing pathologies. The images are three-dimensional and provide a very good view on both, the spine and the nerve roots so it can be determined the state of the condition;
  • Ultrasound of brachiocephalic vessels (extracranial digital imaging) – examination of main vessels in the neck, at their entry into the cranial cavity, allows appraising the state of venous vessels in the neck, which inform your doctor about the possible disruption of blood flow;
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that detects the electrical activity of the cortex through surface electrodes, situated on the scalp. EEG is widely used in the diagnosis of epilepsy, encephalopathy, in monitoring brain activity during anesthesia, in patients in coma or for brain death determination. In case of children, the investigation is performed using our performant equipment, the patient benefiting from a separate room, where he/she is asleep by the parents, to reduce tension and stress, and then the electrodes are placed on the scalp.
  • Osteodensitometry (DEXA) is a method used to measure bone mineral density. Medpark uses the latest equipment, which allows examination of the lumbar spine, hip or uni- and bilateral forearm. The most frequent cause for bone density loss is osteoporosis, followed by a deficiency of vitamin D.
